Whats Happening and Whats it for?
The ride is a 3500klm charity ride by a few motor bike riders from Sydney to Merty Merty on the Strzelecki Track in Central Australia and then continuing down the Track through the Flinders Ranges and back to Sydney via Broken Hill and Dubbo. The riders will leave from Dee Why Beach in Sydney on 11th April 2009. The primary aim of the ride is to raise awareness of prostate cancer and the need for men to just talk to their doctor about it. Lives are saved every day because this cancer can be detected early. The riders are also hoping to raise money to help fund research into the development of improved bio-markers that will help to predict the likelihood of cancer.
Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men and the second commonest cause of male cancer death. Each year in Australia, close to 3000 men die of prostate cancer - equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer.
Prostate Cancer Institute
Money raised will be provided to the Prostate Cancer Institute (PCI). The Institute is seeking to continue research aimed at the identification of new and more predictive prostate cancer bio-markers. The PCI is both a physical site and a model of care. It is located within the Division of Cancer Services at St George Hospital, Kogarah in Sydney. At the PCI, men with prostate cancer receive individual assessment, discussion and treatment according to the nature of their type of prostate cancer. Apart from medical intervention, the PCI also supports research activities targeted in a way which enhances the assessment/advice, treatment and continuing care for men with prostate cancer. http://www.prostatecancer.org.au/
Prostate cancer is regarded as an "old man’s disease" but I was diagnosed when I was 46.
I was lucky because my brother discovered his prostate cancer some 3 years earlier and as this cancer seems in part to be genetically related, I started having an annual PSA blood test. In 2007 my PSA test, although still within the acceptable band, showed a significant increase. Initially my doctor told me not to worry about it but with some persuasion and a biopsy I was diagnosed with cancer.
Now, about a year later I’ve had the prostate removed and the cancer is gone - I was saved by a simple blood test and by having knowledge of my family medical history.
The logic for the trip then became fairly simple;
There are men who's lives could be saved by simply encouraging them to talk to their doctor about prostate cancer
Riding a motorbike through central Australia with some mates seemed like a good way to raise this awareness and hopefully also raise some money for research.
It was really that simple!

After 20 years in the Motorcycle Repair field, concentrating on bodywork repairs and painting, it became increasingly obvious there was a need here in Adelaide for a business catering to every facet of Motorcycle Repair and Maintenance. A 'One Stop Shop' if you like, less than a kilometre from the city.
The most important aspect of this concept is that the majority of work be undertaken 'In house'. By doing this they are able to offer a very cost effective, personal and efficient service.
